■What is "Aoi Matsuri festival"?
・It was considered to be a national event in the Heian era, and is one of the three biggest festivals in Kyoto that have been passed down to this day although it was interrupted for a while.
・The parade consists of more than 500 people, dresses like Heian-style and leaves for Kamigamo Jinja Shrine via Shimogamo Jinja Shrine. It's spectacular!
■Each parade more than 20 people expresses their story of the Heian era.
・"Norijiri" who is a rider to lead.
・"Kebiishinosakan" who is in charged of a police judiciary.
・"Kebiishinojo" who is in charge of the guard.
■The history of Aoi Matsuri Festival
When starvation and epidemics spread over the capital about 1,400 years ago, people said the cause was "the anger of deity of Kamo".
Therefore the Emperor sent an Imperial messenger (Chokushi) to hold a festival and soothe deity, the storm was finally relieved.

*The parade (May 15th) will be postponed until the following day (May 16th) because of rain.
*If you cannot participate in the festival on May 16th, you won't get a refund.

*Only in the case of cancellation, we will refund you the ticket price excluding the postage (JPY 450).
Q. What time should I arrive at the seat?
A. As congestion is expected on the day of the festival, please arrive at Kyoto Imperial Park before 10:00 a.m. or before 11:00 a.m. at Shimogamo Jinja Shrine.
Q. Can we eat at the seat?
A. Yes, you can. Please take all of your trash home with you when you leave.
Q. Is there something I have to know?
A. No parasols, no smoking and no flash photography in the seating area. We hope everyone can enjoy watching the festival.
Q. How long does the festival last?
A. About 1 hour from the head of the parade to the end.
Q. Where should I ask about the festival if weather condition is not good?
A. You can ask at Kyoto City Tourism Association [tel: 075-213-1717] or Facebook ("Like!Kyoto" http://www.facebook.com/LikeKyoto) about postponement. Please access it after 6:00 a.m. on May 15th.
